What is the Redirect & HTTP Status Checker?

Every redirect costs time and can leak link equity when it is set up wrongly. Paste up to 10 URLs and the checker follows each one hop by hop, showing every status code, the destination of each redirect, response time per hop and the final URL β€” exactly as a browser or Googlebot experiences it.

It highlights the problems that hurt SEO: temporary 302s that should be permanent 301s, chains of several redirects, loops, HTTP pages that are not forced to HTTPS, meta-refresh soft redirects and URLs that end in errors.

Key features of the Redirect & HTTP Status Checker

  • Bulk checking

Check up to 10 URLs in one go.

  • Full redirect chain

Every hop with status code, location header and time.

  • Choose the user agent

Test as Googlebot desktop or smartphone, Chrome or iPhone.

  • Problem detection

Loops, long chains, 302s, HTTP to HTTPS issues, meta refresh and errors.

  • Useful headers

Server, cache, X-Robots-Tag, HSTS and CDN headers for each response.

How to use the Redirect & HTTP Status Checker

  1. Paste URLs

One URL per line, up to 10.

  2. Choose a user agent

Googlebot is best for SEO checks.

  3. Run the check

Results show the final status and every hop.

  4. Fix and re-check

Point redirects straight to the final URL and use 301 for permanent moves.

HTTP status codes explained

200 means the page loaded. 301 and 308 are permanent redirects that pass ranking signals to the new URL. 302 and 307 are temporary redirects for short-term moves. 404 means the page is missing and 410 that it is gone for good. 5xx codes mean the server failed. For SEO you want every important URL to return 200 directly, or one 301 to a URL that returns 200.

Why redirect chains are a problem

Each hop adds latency for visitors and another request for crawlers. Google follows up to 10 hops but recommends keeping chains short; long chains waste crawl budget and are fragile. Update old redirects and internal links so they point straight at the final destination.

Pro tips from our PPC and SEO team

  • After a site migration, check your top 100 URLs from analytics.
  • Redirect HTTP and non-www in a single hop.
  • Update internal links instead of relying on redirects.
  • Use 410 for pages that are permanently removed.

Redirect & HTTP Status Checker: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a 301 and a 302 redirect?

A 301 tells search engines the page has moved permanently, so they transfer ranking signals and index the new URL. A 302 says the move is temporary, so the old URL may stay in the index.

How many redirects are too many?

One is ideal. Two is acceptable. Three or more hops should be collapsed into a single redirect.

Why check as Googlebot?

Some sites redirect bots, mobile users or certain countries differently. Checking as Googlebot shows what Google actually sees.

What is a meta refresh redirect?

It is a redirect done in the page HTML rather than by the server. Search engines may treat it as a soft redirect; a server-side 301 is more reliable.
