What is the Geo Ranking Heatmap?
Your Google Maps ranking changes block by block. A business can be number 1 next to its office and invisible two miles away. The Geo Ranking Heatmap lays a grid of points over your service area so you can record your rank for a keyword at each point and see exactly where you are strong and where competitors win.
Search for your business location, choose the grid size and spacing, then enter ranks by clicking points, pasting a grid or importing a CSV. The heatmap calculates Average Rank Position (ARP), Average Total Rank Position (ATRP) and Share of Local Voice (SoLV), and you can save scans to compare progress over time.

Why proximity changes local rankings
For “near me” and local searches, Google weighs the distance between the searcher and each business heavily. A grid view reveals that effect: rankings usually fade as points move away from your location. Strong relevance and prominence (categories, reviews, links, content) widen the area where you stay in the top three.
Understanding ARP, ATRP and SoLV
Average Rank Position (ARP) averages your rank across the points where you were found. Average Total Rank Position (ATRP) includes the points where you were not found (counted as 21), so it reflects true coverage. Share of Local Voice (SoLV) is the percentage of points where you rank in the top 3 — the positions that win most Map Pack clicks.
How to check a rank at a grid point
Use a rank checker that supports GPS coordinates, or use Chrome developer tools “Sensors” to set your location to the point’s latitude and longitude before searching Google Maps. Each point’s popup shows its exact coordinates and a search link to make this quick.
Pro tips from our PPC and SEO team
- Use the same keyword and grid settings every time you compare scans.
- Start with a 5×5 grid at 1–2 km for city businesses.
- Use wider spacing (3–5 mi) for rural or service-area businesses.
- Focus improvements on the direction where rankings drop fastest.
Geo Ranking Heatmap: frequently asked questions
What is a local rank grid?
It is a set of evenly spaced points over a map. Checking your Google Maps rank at each point shows how your local visibility changes across your service area.
Does the tool check rankings automatically?
Automatic grid scanning requires paid location-specific SERP data. This free tool handles the grid, maths and visualisation; you enter ranks from manual checks or import results from another tool.
What grid size should I use?
A 5×5 or 7×7 grid is a good balance between detail and effort. Use 9×9 or larger for agencies tracking competitive keywords.
What counts as “not found”?
If the business is not in the first 20 local results at a point, enter 0 or leave it blank. It is treated as 21 for ATRP.
Is my data saved?
Saved scans are stored in your browser on this device and can be exported as CSV.
